Abstract | The crash of the housing market in 2006 forced many families across the country to live with relatives or another family also known as "doubled up" or homeless. The McKinney-Vento Act offers protection through safeguards that schools must follow. Since the implementation of the McKinney-Vento Act there has been limited research on elementary level principals and their knowledge and understanding of the students who are homeless. Using interviews, this exploratory study investigated principal's knowledge of the McKinney-Vento Act in one southern school district where there has been a sharp rise in homeless students (2000 %+) since 2005. This study explored principals' use of the ways that they ensured that teachers were meeting students' instructional needs, as well as what these elementary principals did on a daily basis to ensure the students learning needs were met. Findings from this study provided insight regarding their understanding and actions taken to ensure that schools were meeting the specialized needs of elementary level students living as homeless.
