AbstractEducators do not have continual support to actively seek out and participate in high quality professional development. The research study focused on the problem of early childhood instructors employed by National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited institutions in Cook County, Illinois, not always participating in professional development opportunities offering effective instructional strategies for implementing curriculum for children 2-6 years old. A qualitative phenomenological design was implemented through the use of open-ended interviews conducted in a purposive sample. Through thematic coding and analysis, the study identified factors contributing to a lack of participation in quality professional development programs by early childcare practitioners, which included cost of programs, time and length of seminars, budgeted time off for seminar attendance, and distance to professional development site. Based on these conclusions, recommendations are presented for NAEYC accredited institutions in Cook County, Illinois, outlining strategies to limit barriers for staff participation in quality professional development trainings. These include employer-sponsored or reimbursed professional development training and organizational incentives for seeking out additional seminars to improve instruction.
