AbstractThe objective of this research was to determine if a correlation exists between a college student's spirituality and his or her academic performance (GPA) or his or her academic achievement. An insignificant amount of literature has been published in which researchers explore spirituality and academic performance or achievement. This current study begins to fill this gap in the literature. Spirituality, academic achievement and performance were tested and demographic information was controlled. Q1. Is there a positive relationship between students' spirituality and their academic performances? Q2. Is there a positive relationship between students' spirituality and their perceptions of their academic achievements? Q3. Is there a positive relationship between students' demographic variables and their academic performances? Q4. Is there a positive relationship between students' demographic variables and their perceptions of their academic achievements? This study was completed using a quantitative evaluation method. A questionnaire was used to collect (a) demographic information, (b) the participant's perception of his or her academic achievement, and (c) a measure of the student's spirituality from the Spirituality Assessment Scale (Beazley, 1998, Meaning and measurement of spirituality in organizational settings: Development of a spirituality assessment scale ). College students voluntarily participated in the study. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS)(TM) program. The data were analyzed to determine if a correlation exists between a college students' level of spirituality, as determined by Beazley's Spirituality Assessment Scale, and their academic achievement or academic performance. The primary statistical procedure used was a Pearson product-moment correlation test. Regression plots were used to express the relationship between the multiple independent variables identified and measured in the demographic survey and the dependent variable, academic achievement or academic performance. The results of the study indicated a statistically significant positive correlation between spirituality and academic performance. There was also a positive relationship between spirituality and academic achievement, but the results were not statistically significant. Recommendations for future studies include replicating the study as-is or adding qualitative questions to add more depth to the findings. Continued research in this area should seek to strengthen, verify, or even refute these findings. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
