AbstractThe purpose of this study was to gather data from the Cache County School District to evaluate the perceptions of middle school students related to Technology, Life, and Careers (TLC) curriculum. The elements of TLC have been a core curriculum requirement for middle/junior high school students since 1987. It was designed to focus on the concerns and needs of early adolescent students. These needs were categorized into three content areas of study: self-knowledge, education and occupation exploration, and career planning. TLC was created to help students assess their individual interests and abilities in planning and preparing for their future. The course gives guidance counseling and direction in their educational pursuits toward possible careers. TLC was built around the objective of helping students begin to acquire the skills needed for a successful life. Many young adolescents have stereotypical views of occupations which often limit their aspirations for possible careers. Career, life, and technical courses must be organized to help middle-school students gain a realistic view of the world of work. They need to understand the need to gain an excellent education and plan their future. The seventh-grade students of the four middle schools in the district were assessed to determine the extent TLC: (a) helped students evaluate their abilities and interests in various career possibilities, (b) aided students in developing interest in exploring various educational and occupational possibilities, and (c) directed students toward the planning of their future through the Student Educational Occupation Plan (SEOP) process, which is required of all students in the State of Utah. This study was designed to examine if TLC produced the desired changes in students' attitudes and perceptions toward gender-specific, nontraditional technical and engineering careers.
