AbstractData from site visits, interviews and a survey of twelve high schools and one tech center in the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District (OAISD) were analyzed in order to evaluate the processes that are used for course and career planning. It was found that most students and parents have some knowledge of a general course planning form (called an educational development plan or EDP); but the plan itself, career development activities, and career and technical education were not of great interest to them or the teaching staff. Additional findings included these: (1) over 80% of the students planned to attend college immediately after high school and that was their major focus in terms of completing the EDP; (2) career pathways were of little interest to most of the counselors who believed that the status quo processes were adequate for course selection; (3) 60-70% of students had given serious thought to potential careers; (4) there was little collaboration between the schools; and (5) typically career activities and EDPs were completed in 8th or 9th grade considered too early in the high school career. (Eight tables are included. Appended are forms for site visit interviews, focus group interviews, the survey, and a permission letter). (AJ)
