Abstract | This brochure offers parents tips on helping their children connect writing with reading. It begins by noting that preschool children often want to scribble on paper, scribbles which sometimes represent a story. It suggests making space in the home for literacy, and encouraging early efforts. The brochure then offers four brief activities for every family: reading and acting out fables or short stories; creating a personal word dictionary; sending children little notes; and helping the child to start a journal. It also suggests including your child in household activities that include elements of reading and writing, and it describes how technology can help. It concludes that because the skills for reading and writing reinforce one another, children's skills and proficiency will be strengthened if they make the reading-writing connection. It lists six other brochures from the International Reading Association. (RS) |
