Abstract | This resource manual, in French, is designed to assist Alberta teachers in the identification and education of students with emotional disorders and/or mental illnesses. It takes a comprehensive look at six emotional disorders. The first section focuses on eating disorders. It describes the characteristics and symptoms of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating. Risk factors that may trigger the onset of eating disorders are identified, and myths surrounding food, weight, and body image are included. Section 2 presents short descriptions of seven common anxiety disorders, including separation anxiety disorder, overanxious disorder of childhood, post-traumatic stress, acute stress, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder due to general medical conditions, and substance-induced anxiety. The following section describes different types of depression in childhood and adolescents. Section 4 presents an overview of the characteristics and causes of schizophrenia. Section 5 defines oppositional defiant disorder, describes genetic and environmental causes, and provides strategies for ensuring the safety of other students. The final section defines conduct disorder, along with genetic and environmental causes. Each section explains medical and clinical treatment options and provides strategies that teachers can use to support the education and treatment of students with the specific disorder, along with a list of annotated resources. (Each section contains references.) (CR) |
