AbstractThis student text and teacher resource text are part of a continuing series on current and historical international issues, placing special emphasis on the importance of educating students in their participatory role as citizens. They examine the mix of interests and values that have drawn the United States into the Middle East, focusing on the Arab-Israeli conflict, the significance of oil, and the politicization of Islam. At the core of the unit is a framework of four distinct options for U.S. policy toward the Middle East. The background reading prepares students to thoughtfully consider the complexities of the U.S. relationship with the Middle East. Part 1 surveys the history of U.S. involvement in the Middle East up to the Persian Gulf War. Part 2 examines how the U.S. policy agenda in the region has changed in the wake of the Persian Gulf War. Prior to the unit, students should have a foundation in the history and geography of the Middle East, particularly with respect to the region's ethnic composition, natural resources, and religious landscape. Includes both five- and three-day lesson plans. (Author/BB)
