Abstract | A discussion of the use of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) in the second language classroom focuses on whether the kinds of CMC available provide appropriate forms of interpersonal interaction to enhance learning. A review of recent research looks at what is known about the ideal conditions for learning a second language, the role of the Internet in language learning, some software packages and tools for videoconferencing and chat sessions, and some of the advantages of using chat sessions and videoconferencing for language learning. Suggestions are made for preparing CMC sessions, including student grouping and turn-taking and the subject(s) students will discuss. A sample session outline is presented here. Techniques for using the sessions and saved transcripts productively are outlined, suggestions for error correction are offered, ways of working with different text types are noted, and ways of augmenting instructional materials are listed.
