Abstract | This booklet describes the adult education system in Indonesia. The first section provides background information, including the geographic and demographic characteristics and the socioeconomic setting of the country. The history of education in the country is also discussed. Government policy is the topic of the second section. Included are a summary of the law concerning the national education system, the government regulations supporting the legislation, and implementation strategies. Achievements in adult education in Indonesia are chronicled in the third section, including descriptions of the following: the illiteracy eradication program; the Packet B program (an out-of-school-equivalency program for lower secondary education providing both general education and skills training); skill training by private training institutes; the small-scale scale income-generating program; and various smaller programs targeted at special groups, such as farmers and women. The last section contains 10 subsections that profile the role of tutors in the tutorial activities of adult education: developing curriculum and learning materials; the prospective learners' approach, preparing, conducting, and evaluating tutorial results; assignments to help learners to develop self-learning habits; assignments for group learning; motivating learners; finding a business venture as a livelihood; forming a learning community; and administering the results of learning activities.
