Abstract | The information in this supplementary notebook is intended to provide teachers with additional materials, ideas and suggestions, and activities to help in implementing the first 21 units of the Applied Mathematics modules that help develop and refine job-related mathematics skills. An introduction lists the 36 units of the complete Applied Mathematics curriculum developed by the Center for Occupational Research and Development (in Waco, Texas) and a consortium of states. Each unit contains a video that relates the unit topic to the world of work, written material, hands-on laboratory activities, and word problems; cooperative learning; and the teacher's role in cooperative learning. Types of materials and activities provided in this notebook include word problems, review sheets, and study guides. Unit topics are as follows: getting to know the calculator; naming numbers in different ways; finding answers with calculators; problem solving techniques; estimating answers; English and metric units; graphs, charts, and tables; dealing with data; working with lines and angles; shapes in two and three dimensions; ratios and proportions; scale drawings; signed numbers and vectors; scientific notation; precision, accuracy, and tolerance; solving practical problems with powers and roots; using formulas to solve practical problems; solving problems that involve linear and nonlinear equations; graphing data; statistics; probabilities; and using right-triangle relationships. A teaching supplement contains lab activities, quizzes, review sheets, study guides, video activities, and work sheets. (YLB) |
