AbstractA study compared the effectiveness of computer-assisted reading instruction to that of a direct teaching model. Nineteen adult male inmates from Windham School System's Ellis II Unit (located in Texas) special education classrooms served as subjects. The subjects were divided into two groups each of which spent one hour a day on reading. One group used computer assisted instruction, while the other group participated in traditional teacher-led reading lessons. Treatment effects were measured after two weeks using the Badar Informal Reading Inventory in the areas of oral reading and reading comprehension. Results indicated: (1) significant pretest to posttest gains made within the traditional direct teaching model; (2) gains were made by both instructional methods, even though the gains did not show one method better than the other in a statistically significant way. A survey given after the treatment indicated that student preference was for teacher-led lessons over computer assisted instruction. (Twenty-six footnotes, and eight tables and two figures of data are included.) (Author/RS)
