Abstract | This book focuses on the requirements for leadership in self-managing schools. It contains 9 chapters divided among 3 main parts. The first part is entitled "A New Context and a Refined Model for Self-Management." Chapter 1 uses the concept of megatrend to describe developments in Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. Chapter 2 discusses revisions of the leadership model set forth in "The Self-Managing School" (1988), which broaden and specify the context for self-managing schools, acknowledge the importance of strategic planning, and sharpen the focus on curriculum and learning. The third chapter reviews the literature so as to build a framework for guiding leaders in self-managing schools. Part B, entitled "Leadership in the Self-Managing School," contains chapters 4-7, which illustrate leadership strategies based on the revised model. Chapter 4 discusses cultural leadership and the role of the leader in creating and sustaining a culture of excellence. A model for strategic planning and implementing a school development plan is provided in the fifth chapter. Chapter 6 examines educational leadership and the ways in which teachers, parents, and others can improve teaching and learning outcomes. Chapter 7 outlines ways in which a school can be accountable without compromising its values. Part C, "Transforming Our Schools," which contains the last two chapters, begins with a focus on school systems and the role of leaders in chapter 8. Chapter 9 presents a vision of the self-managing school for the future. Eight figures and chapter endnotes are included. (LMI) |
