Abstract | Instructional materials are provided for a course that covers basic concepts of physics and chemistry. Designed for use in a workplace literacy project developed by Mercer County Community College (New Jersey) and its partners, the course describes applications of these concepts to real-life situations, with an emphasis on applications of relevance to General Motors workers. A one-page course outline lists objectives and provides a topical outline. Fourteen topics are covered: measurement, density, scientific method, gravity, inertia and Newton's Laws of Motion, friction, simple machines (planes, levers, pulleys), center of gravity, chemistry (matter, radiation, polymers), pH, electricity, and fire fighting. For each topic, content, comments, and experiment(s) are provided. Appendixes include a list of other topics, review sheets and review questions, a quiz, and sources for additional experiments.
