AbstractRetention at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, was studied, based on the entire population of 29,372 undergraduate degree-seeking students enrolled in a semester between fall 1981 and 1987. Two measures of the retention rate are used: cohort survival, the percentage of the original cohort of entering students that is enrolled in or has graduated by a specified semester; and semester return, the percentage of students completing a semester who enroll in the next semester. Attention is directed to: the retention rate, changes in the retention rate over time, and differences in the retention rate among subpopulations of students. Using multivariate regression analysis, the relationship between retention and the following factors were assessed: age, sex, race/ethnicity, college, transfer or first-time student, grade level, full-time or part-time course load, and cumulative grade point average. Also studied were: factors that affect freshman-year retention, retention patterns of stop-outs, within-semester withdrawals, nondegree students who matriculate, and the measurement of retention for the College of Public and Community Service, which uses a competency-based system.
