| Abstract | This booklet examines Japan's unparalleled economic achievements and its growing political prominence. Reflecting upon Japan's economic, political, and societal dynamism, the document offers helpful insights into how this nation, nearly devoid of natural resources but blessed with a self-sacrificing, highly skilled, and dedicated work force, has adjusted to changing world economic conditions with extraordinary skill. The document emphasizes that Japan's foreign policies are rooted in pro-Western and economically based domestic considerations. Japan is also portrayed as increasingly activist in the international arena. The first three chapters introduce Japan, investigate its historical past, and examine change in Japanese society.
