| Abstract | The teaching activities presented in this pamphlet focus on children's playground rhymes, chants, and traditional verse. The pamphlet begins with a discussion of children's lack of interest in poetry, a definition of poetry, and suggested ways to approach poetry. Following that, it explores ways to use playground chants and traditional verse: (1) to increase children's enjoyment of language (through tongue twisters and nonsense language); (2) to develop their response to rhyme and rhythm; (3) to provide a basis for children's own writing; (4) to ease the way into reading other forms of literature; and (5) to encourage children to read--through the use of riddles, parodies, fractured nursery rhymes, train chants, and scary stories.
