Abstract | An instructional program to improve adolescent student mastery of real-life decision-making skills produced very positive results in terms of teacher comfort with the program and increased student performance. Five core skills for decision-making were the basis of the program: identification, selection and assessment of decision criteria, information summary and self evaluation. These skills were operationally defined and ordered into performance hierarchies. Detailed, virtually scripted lesson plans and student learning material were constructed. Field testing identified program deficiencies, and revisions were made. Seventh and eighth grade instructional packages for classroom use in remediation and reinforcement were implemented by two boards of education in Eastern Ontario after inservice sessions were presented. The results of student performance data provide positive evidence of effectiveness. (Author/CM) |
