Abstract | The product of a conference concerned with the role of libraries in developing countries, this set of proceedings includes opening comments from the conference; a paper on "Strategies in the Planning of Library and Information Services," by Hedwig Anuar; five papers on the general topic of "Literacy and the Library"; an address entitled "Reaching Out: Access to Library-Based Information Services in the Rural Areas of Papua New Guinea," by Radha Rasmussen; and a set of 11 brief talks on the topic of "Agencies in New Guinea Involved in Information Work." Each of the papers or set of papers delivered on a particular topic is followed by a transcript of the succeeding question and answer period. Appended are a list of details on the conference participants and a paper entitled"Speaking Volumes," by Tony Austin, which discusses the importance of libraries and media centers in the educational process, and especially in the development of a literate populace.
