Abstract | The material in this handbook was developed with the idea of stimulating (presumably adult) students to ask questions in a spontaneous manner. Through these questions, the students elicit the newspaper story from the teacher, who arouses their interest by divulging one leading fact. Fifteen exemplary newspaper stories are summarized to initiate the teacher in the use of such materials. The suggested method for using the stories involves a warm-up of questions followed by the introduction of the story in such a way as to arouse student interest. Spontaneous and guided questions are then elicited and answered in such a way as to enhance the student's communication skills. It is recommended that cue words from student questions be recorded on tape or on the board. The discussion of the story may lead to drills and writing exercises.
