Abstract | The primary goal of the postsecondary needs assessment in Northeastern New York State was to provide adult education planners with information for program planning and evaluation. Questionnaire respondents included 1,055 individuals from four subregions: Albany Center, Outer Albany, Plattsburg, and Utica-Rome. Data analysis is focused on: (1) overall interest/potential market, (2) knowledge factor, (3) motivation factor, (4) background characteristics of interested individuals, (5) approach-avoidance model (approach), and (6) approach-avoidance model (avoidance). A high interest in continuing education was reflected by the respondents, as 51% indicated wanting to take a course at some point in their life and 34% being presently interested in taking a course. Courses leading to occupational skills were of the most interest to prospective students. Past and prospective students tended to include above average proportions of women, the employed, those with higher incomes, the better-educated, and middle-aged persons. The main reason stated for nonparticipation was a lack of time. One-fourth of the respondents indicated no immediate or future interest in continuing education. Depending on the subregion, 27-49% of the respondents have never been on any Northeast Region campus. A copy of the questionnaire is appended. (EA) |
