Abstract	This report presents data analyzed by county and multicounty planning region which indicate that North Carolina's infant mortality rate has declined by 59 percent since 1940. (In 1940, approximately 58 infants for every 1,000 live births died in North Carolina before their first birthday.) This reduction in infant deaths is comparable to that experienced in the United States as a whole between 1940 and 1970; however, the North Carolina rate has remained consistently higher than the U.S. rate over the 30-year period. The North Carolina data showed considerable county-to-county variability in infant deaths. Thirty-four counties had rates of infant mortality in excess of the North Carolina rate. This finding was interpreted as an indication of inadequate health delivery systems in those counties. Regional analysis of data showed that many of the multicounty regions with the highest levels of infant mortality contain most of the rural counties of the state. Recommendations for further research into background factors involved in infant mortality are included. (Author/BRT)
