AbstractThrough cooperation with Valparaiso University, schools in northwest Indiana provided specialized personnel to assist the disabled reader through diagnosis and prescriptive recommendations and to assist teachers with the improvement of reading instruction. The project included the following programs: (1) the Northwest Indiana Elementary and Secondary School Cooperative formed among 33 school corporations, (2) the Northwest Multi-Service Educational Center serving as the central office, (3) the Northwest Reading Clinic, and (4) a teacher inservice program. The intense inservice program with 8,906 participants emphasized the characteristics of reading disability, trends and techniques of reading remediation, and the use of published materials. One hundred and six teachers have taken graduate course work in reading, and 30 of these have completed the clinical practicum course and now serve as reading clinicians at the educational center. Data from the sampling show that intervention of the failure syndrome has occurred in 94 percent of the disabled readers. Implementation of the project, its operational programs, and significant achievements of each program are reported, and figures and tables are included. (AW)
