AbstractA computer-based system model for the monitoring and management of the instructional process was conceived, developed and refined through the techniques of systems analysis. This report describes the various aspects and components of this project in a series of independent and self-contained units. The first unit provides an overview of the entire system--the approach, objectives, and procedures. A system approach to computer-managed instruction as a vehicle for accountability and evaluation in education is presented in the second unit, and the third unit describes the Adaptive Instructional Management System (AIMS) which provides computer management for the model courses of the project. Unit four, the Empirical Course Development Model, is an instructional manual for the construction of individualized, self-paced, self-healing, multimedia instructional systems. An objective classification hierarchy which is predictive of student performance is evaluated in the fifth unit. Units six and seven examine the capability of AIMS to individualize and optimize instruction, and the eighth and ninth units report on two different model courses. The final unit introduces a major derivative and expansion of the original system and refers to dissemination and use of the project. (Author/SH)
