| Abstract | The article reports on the efficacy of interventions made to improve the attrition rates of students of Japanese as a Foreign Language at the University of Sydney. Specifically, the study sought to evaluate differences in outcomes between students with a background in a morphographic writing system and those without such a background. Four intervention techniques were developed and integrated into a first-year Japanese course throughout 1997, with the goals of improving time managements skills, providing effective learning strategies, increasing student motivation, and consequently increasing the number of successful learners. Outcomes suggest that the intervention techniques improved the success rates and academic achievement of students in 1997. However, it was found that students with a background in a morphographic writing system benefited more than students with a background in a phonographic writing system only, when improvement was measured by academic achievement. The latter group, however, showed significantly increased motivation and benefited more from learning strategy instruction and time management practice than did the group with a background in a morphographic writing system.
