Abstract | Based on the theoretical notions of immigrant optimism, straight-line assimilation, and segmented assimilation, this article explores three main research questions: (1) Do immigrant students show higher levels of school-related motivation and aspiration than their peers from native families (immigrant optimism)? (2) Are these differences smaller for second-generation immigrant students than for first-generation immigrant students (straight-line assimilation)? (3) Do the differences between first-generation and second-generation immigrant students vary across immigrant groups from different countries of origin (segmented assimilation)? These questions were explored with the international and national data sets from the PISA 2003 assessments, focusing on extrinsic motivation in mathematics, aspirations in terms of educational certificates and future occupation as the dependent variables. The findings are generally in line with the immigrant optimism hypothesis, although the patterns vary for different immigrant groups. No consistent support for straight-line assimilation or segmented assimilation could be identified. For the most part, immigrant students tend to show relatively high levels of motivation and aspiration in the second generation as well. Limitations of the analyses and need for further research are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.). |
