AbstractIn these early years of the 21st century a new vision for discussing young people has emerged, one that emphasizes that young people may appropriately be regarded as resources to be developed and not as problems to be managed. ... School-age children spend almost half of their waking hours in leisure activities. How young people can best use this free time has been a source of controversy. [The book] presents conceptual, empirical, and policy-relevant advances in research on children's and adolescents' participation in the developmental contexts represented by extracurricular activities and after-school programs. ... The present volume both reflects and significantly extends the theoretical and empirical knowledge base, and the lessons from youth program practice ... . As such, this book adds substantially to the basic and the applied literatures that serve to effectively counter the deficit view of youth that was predominant in the study of adolescence for much of the 20th century. ... The present volume is an exemplar of diverse and significant collaborations. ... he brings together a multidisciplinary international group of experts from several fields of study to discuss the importance of organized activities. ... More so than any other volume presently available, this book offers a compelling demonstration of the excellent science and service ongoing both in the United States and internationally in order to understand the processes through which youth-serving, community-based programs can promote positive development of a substantial array of individual and social characteristics among diverse youth. Moreover, this volume demonstrates how such knowledge both contributes to and derives from the ongoing efforts of practitioners to deliver youth-serving, after-school programs that are effective in enhancing health and development among diverse young people. ... This volume is appropriate for students and scholars in psychology, criminal justice, leisure science, sociology, human development, education, prevention, and public policy. This book will also be of interest to professionals who administer programs and develop policy on youth. (DIPF/Orig.).
