Abstract	There are three types of teaching about peaceful co- existence that can be identified from a study of history and geography textbooks from different parts of the world. These are based on a conceptual understanding of the region, the nation and the locality. The closed model, in which history and geography teaching concentrate on an in- depth and detailed analysis of the country, tends to exclude the surrounding world. The concept of "peaceful co-existence" is therefore based on a very strong national identity. On the other hand, the opposing model involves an in-depth study of the outside world. History and geography teaching deal with countries, regions and civilisations one after the other without establishing definite boundaries or, in other words, without any real interest in learning to live with others. Finally, there is comprehensive teaching, encountered less frequently. It stresses the individuality of those involved and the confrontation of different points of view within the world system in order to study the existing links between the participants and the surrounding world. This type of teaching encourages people to get to know each other and, in this way, represents the most suitable model for learning to live together. (DIPF/orig.).
