Abstract | This booklet is a synthesis of principles of motivation that have emerged from research into the effect of motivational practices on school learning. It addresses more traditional aspects, such as achievement motivation, intrinsic motivation and goal orientation, as well as the effect of teacher practices that promote motivational beliefs, motivation strategies and willpower. It focuses on learning goals and the effect of motivation on the pursuit of these goals, whilst recognizing the need for teacher practices that target socio-emotinal goals as well.... In this booklet [one] will get to know two youngsters, ... who are both 11 years old and are attending school in different parts of the world. It is the intention [of the author] to describe the thoughts, feelings and actions of these two children in order to provide an illustration of the various constructs described in the research sections.
