Abstract	The presented document is the national study of Greatbritain on the division of responsibilities at national, regional and local level in the education system. It was based on a questionnaire survey drawn up by the Committee on Culture, Education and the Media of the Standing Conference of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe. Altogether 23 European countries participated in this survey. It aims at reflecting the allocation of responsibilities between the central government and local as well as regional authorities. The justification for the study was the current trend in a growing number of countries towards decentralization, deregulation and autonomy in the education system. To understand the division of responsibilities at the national level an brief outline of the education system in Greatbritain is given referring to school adminstration, allocation of funds, adult education and the central question: centralization or decentralization.
