AbstractFor most, being served in a restaurant, treated nicely at a job interview, smiled at in the street, or being able to work is nothing out of the ordinary. Sadly, it is not the case for many. Especially for those who are poor. Especially for those who have little education. Especially for those who are Roma (or in other words Gypsy) living in Hungary, in the European Union, in 2012. This past March, Roma journalists--despite their press credentials--were not let in to the Hungarian Parliament building to document the National Award Ceremony of Artists and Scientists--just because they are Roma. And this institutional discrimination is what many Roma kids of Central and Eastern Europe are growing up facing. Roma people are an ethnic group who are dispersed across many nations with the largest populations in Central and Eastern Europe. This article introduces a project that aims to change this, starting at the most obvious place, the kids, with the most obvious steps, getting to know each other and showing positive role models. Yet, emphasizing the most obvious, the project has proven to be an innovative approach to reclaiming Roma children. (Contains 1 footnote.) (ERIC).
