| Abstract | Gravel is a component of parking lots, highway shoulders, garden pathways, and filtration systems. Few people bother to scientifically examine gravel and determine its origin, but gravel can be an effective, inexpensive, and abundant resource for science classrooms. It can serve as a portal for several interdisciplinary science activities and investigations. The authors encourage science teachers to consider gravel investigations in their classrooms. Gravel provides opportunities for students to critically analyze the source, composition, and transportation of common rocks. Such inquiry investigations can help students develop critical-thinking skills and gain a new perspective on the rocks at their feet. (Contains 7 figures and 3 online resources.) (ERIC). |
