Abstract | Research Findings: This article traces the status of child rights in India, with special attention to traditional beliefs that have shaped and sustain gender discrimination. The article examines the possibilities and limitations of the newly implemented Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act of 2009 for operating as an equalizing agent. It further examines the need to go beyond legislation of rights to challenge harmful traditional beliefs that perpetuate discriminatory practices against children. Practice or Policy: The article concludes with the recommendation that raising public awareness and participation along with meaningful and ethical child participation are essential before children in India can enjoy the rights already afforded them.
