Abstract | A focus on adult learning has been quietly driving an increase in local activism among those who traditionally have had the least "voice". It is precisely this kind of grassroots activity that will enable the vision of local democracy and the Big Society to be implemented. In this article, the author hopes to show how a focus on adult learning is helping local authorities connect with their communities in a variety of creative ways and how it underpins the promotion and greater understanding of the value of local democracy. The author believes that by being willing to take the first step in opening up a public space or bringing partners together or by finding a small grant, those involved in adult learning can make a real difference.
