AbstractIn every content area, standardized tests are strongly focused on reading. Today, not only are reading and writing expected to take place in the English/language arts classroom but also in math, science, and social studies. To prepare students for standardized tests in the middle grades and beyond, the U. S. Department of Education recommends providing students with descriptive paragraphs, story problems, and various scenarios to read and interpret in responding to multiple-choice questions. For middle school teachers without an English/language arts background, the challenge is to incorporate reading in their content areas, since many were not trained in literacy instruction during their preservice preparation. This article discusses "Books in Action!", an independent reading project whose purpose is to facilitate manageable incorporation of literacy skills into any content area classroom. By encouraging students to read self-selected material, content area teachers can empower their students to become better learners and readers. (Contains 1 figure.) (ERIC).
