| Abstract | There are currently more than 2,500 secondary schools in England with specialist-school status and the number is increasing as part of the Government's strategy to raise standards of achievement. All specialist schools are required to develop a compulsory community element as part of their specialist school plan. They are expected to interact and consult with local people to identify how they can provide relevant high-quality learning opportunities for those in their communities. Many have chosen to include the establishment and development of an adult learning programme as part of this community element. In this article, the author describes how specialist schools benefit from strong community links through their adult learning programmes. (ERIC). |
