Abstract | The International School of Geneva was founded in Switzerland more than 75 years ago to serve the needs of diplomatic families. Today it is a large, complex academic organization, with three campuses educating more than 3,400 children from ages 3 to 18, representing 110 nationalities and speaking about 80 mother tongues. The school offers curriculum both in English and French, with English being its official language. For two years (2001-02), the author held an early childhood administrative/teaching position at the school's Pregny-Rigot campus. She learned many things about working in a vastly diverse school community. In this article, she shares what she discovered about developing positive relationships with multinational families within a context of developmentally appropriate practice. Finally, the author offers a group reading strategy that other teachers can use for developing partnerships with families in any school context. (ERIC). |
