Abstract | Children enjoy water play, and kindergarten children can learn about the water cycle. Teachers are already introducing elements of the water cycle when discussing weather and bodies of water. The water cycle also can be a springboard for teaching children about plants and animals and the importance of water for sustaining life and shaping our world. Teaching basic concepts about the water cycle to students in preschool to second grade lays an important foundation for a more sophisticated understanding in later grades. This article describes how one kindergarten teacher teacher designed lessons for this age group using a whole-to-part-to-whole approach. In other words, after introducing the water cycle, the class focused on one element of the water cycle before reviewing the full cycle. Additional resources are provided. (ERIC). |
