Abstract | The primary Communities of Scientific Enquiry project is one element of the outreach work in Science in Society in Biomedical Sciences in partnership with the School of Education at the University of Ulster. The project aims to develop scientific understanding and skills at key stage 2 and is a response to several contemporary issues in primary science education, particularly in Northern Ireland. The approach adopted in the primary Communities of Scientific Enquiry project is congruous with the revised curriculum for Northern Ireland, which requires the infusion of thinking skills and personal capabilities across areas of learning. This approach has the potential to engage children and teachers with science and provide a space for teachers to listen to children and identify their misconceptions, promoting thinking skills as well as scientific knowledge and understanding. It also gives children a voice and enables them to direct some of their own learning. (Contains 3 figures and 1 table.) (ERIC). |
