Abstract	When Abe joined the program as an infant, the teachers in the classroom began to notice issues that made caring for Abe just a little more sensitive. As Abe grew into a mobile toddler, he would cover his ears when classroom noise got loud, cry when other children touched him, and often hide under tables to get away. Luckily for Abe, the staff and director were patient and empathetic, and they listened. After completion of multiple assessments and meetings with Abe's parents and center staff, Abe was diagnosed with sensory integration issues and work began to include several qualified specialists in his care. Becoming a champion for all of the children in the classroom was the direction that both the director and Abe's teachers embraced. Efforts in this area included: (1) Helping children work together to accept each other's needs; (2) Modeling actions and words; (3) Setting up environments that best support children; and (4) Providing ear phones when planning any loud activity. The journey of this director and staff began with a commitment to Abe and his parents. By learning more about sensory integration, everyone began to understand that changes to the environment and flexibility were necessary. (Contains 8 resources and 1 online resource.) (ERIC).
