AbstractThis qualitative study explored how higher education leaders understand international partnership between Christian and non-Christian higher education institutions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with leaders from fifteen Christian universities in North America and eleven non-Christian universities representing six other regions of the world. The study found a mixture of motivations for international partnership between Christian and non-Christian universities, with the academic mission of the institution as the primary driver. Participants described six components of the partnership formation process, including clearly communicating Christian institutional identity and mission as well as agreeing upon parameters for faith expression. The study also found that Christian and non-Christian universities are open to a wide variety of reciprocal, mutually beneficial forms of partnership. It is argued that Christian universities ought to pursue global engagement through international partnerships with non-Christian universities. This is because their institutional missions include a commitment to educate students for a globalizing world and because Christian universities are called to serve God's kingdom around the world. When partnering internationally, the study recommends that Christian colleges and universities hold on to a tension of academic excellence, service to the common good, and global engagement rooted in God's redemptive mission in the world. This study was an initial exploration of how international partnership between Christian and non-Christian universities is understood and practiced. It is recommended that future studies explore opportunities for mutually beneficial global engagement in one country or region. Future research could also include case studies of international partnerships between Christian and non-Christian universities.
