AbstractWith the recent changes to the Post 9/11 GI Bill, it is anticipated that the number of military personnel and U.S. veteran students enrolled in college will double to nearly two million by 2015. As non-traditional students, military and veteran college students also have unique social and academic experiences and needs which have been identified through studies using Schlossberg's Transition Theory, as well as, through other veterans' studies. From these studies, four constructs emerge concerning the academic and social experiences and needs of these students: Academic Preparation, Collaboration, Socialization, and Information Access. While previous studies offered responses to these needs and experiences, they were primarily based in human and administrative processes. However, understanding of the influence of technology, specifically iPad technology, on these constructs remains narrow. As such, how does iPad technology influence the academic and social experiences of military personnel and veteran students in college regarding academic preparation, collaboration, socialization, and information access? The purpose of this case study was to explore the utilization and identify the influences portable computing, specifically iPad technology, have on these dimensions of the academic and social experiences of veterans and military personnel college students. Through quantitative methodology, this study first examines if iPad technology is used by veteran and military students at a private, non-profit university in comparison to other personal computing technology. It then discusses findings on how iPads are used by these students with academic preparation tasks, collaboration, socialization, and information access activities while presenting the technology's influence through examination of participant perspectives and comments. Finally, this study concludes with two suggestions for further research including replication of this study with recent releases of the New iPad and iPad Mini and the effect of training with the device as a pre-requisite to distribution and its' consequential utilization by military and veteran college students.
