Abstract | The purpose of this narrative study was two-fold. First, the researcher, an African American male principal in a rural, high minority, intermediate school, used to reflect on strategies implemented to enhance the learning environment that subsequently increased student achievement. Second, determined through the study was how personal leadership behaviors were aligned with the other three factors (external factors; attitudes, values, and beliefs; and organizational structure) of the synergistic leadership theory, the theoretical framework, and how, upon reflection, that impacted experiences of the researcher on the campus. The researcher reflected on how his leadership behaviors impacted the learning environment and student achievement. The researcher also reflected on how the four factors of the SLT related to his personal leadership experiences. The researcher found that the synergistic leadership theory was appropriate in identifying the factors that affected my overall leadership. Also, with respect to the factors of the synergistic leadership theory, he found that, when the other three factors were aligned with his leadership behavior, he was successful. Researchers have tried to explain leadership and how it affects the organization, change, and the strategies that effective leaders use. This researcher recommends that aspiring leaders refer to perspective supervisors, in particular, to ensure that attitudes, values, and beliefs, are aligned. Further, he recommends that aspiring leaders be certain that organizations are open to necessary change. Finally, the information gained from this personal narrative study provides a much needed contribution to the current research regarding synergistic leadership theory as a theoretical framework and a practical leadership theory as well as to the scarce body of personal narrative research in educational leadership.
