AbstractThe extensive amount of research evidence, at all levels of education and with all subject areas, consistently indicates that cooperative learning results in higher achievement, increased positive interpersonal relationships, and higher self-esteem than competitive or individualistic efforts. In physical education, individualistic learning is an important and effective way of acquiring motor skills. However, competition is more effective when children have learned to work together, to understand and appreciate each other's strengths and weaknesses, and to develop and use collaborative skills such as sharing, taking turns, and praising each other. This book is intended to provide a process of gradually blending individualistic, competitive, and cooperative teaching strategies in a quality physical education program. Each activity presented in the book provides sample lessons, photographs, and teacher comments concerning the effectiveness and value of creative and cooperative teaching strategies. The last part of the book expands the use of creative and cooperative teaching strategies in the areas of physical fitness and in the use of physical activities to teach academic skills and concepts within the subject areas of language arts, math, and science. Once a strong cooperative learning environment has been established, it provides a setting in which children can learn to compete appropriately and for the fun and enjoyment of the activity. The book will be useful to elementary school teachers and can be used in college and university courses as a basic text to teach cooperative teaching strategies in physical education. This book is separated into five parts. The first part contains the following chapters: (1) The Role Of Physical Education And How It Should Be Taught; and (2) Individualistic, Competitive And Cooperative Teaching Strategies. The second part contains the following chapters: (3) Guiding Children To Invent New Games; and (4) Guiding Children To Invent Cooperative Games; and (5) Teaching Game Concepts and Skills. The third part contains the following chapters: (6) Adding Creative and Cooperative Components to Gymnastics; and (7) Adding Creative and Cooperative Components To Movement Education. The forth part contains the following chapter: (8) Adding Creative And Cooperative Components To Dance. The fifth and final part of the book contains the following chapters: (9) Teaching Physical Fitness Activities; (10) Teaching Academic Concepts And Skills Through Physical Activities; and (11) A Time To Change Our Emphasis.
