AbstractThis manual provides a synthesis of research-based dropout prevention and intervention and offers examples of interventions that show evidence of effectiveness. This has proven to be a difficult task because the intervention research on dropout and school completion that can be used to inform practice is incomplete (Dynarski & Gleason, 2002; Lehr et al., 2003; Sutherland & MacMillan, 2001). Although there is not yet a solid foundation of research on dropout intervention and prevention from which to make strong conclusions, there is information that educators, administrators, and policymakers can use to help make informed decisions. This tool is intended as a base of current knowledge that can be built upon as additional interventions are implemented and empirically validated. This manual is intended to assist in producing the following outcomes: (1) Increase awareness and knowledge of current theory and research on dropout prevention and intervention; (2) Increase awareness and knowledge of data-based interventions that show evidence of effectiveness; and (3) Improve programming addressing dropout prevention and intervention for students with and without disabilities, resulting in increased rates of school completion. Furthermore, the manual, which is divided into four parts, provides information about various aspects of dropout prevention and intervention. The four parts include: (1) What Do We Know About Dropout Prevention? (2) How Were Sample Intervention Programs Selected? (3) What Works in Dropout Prevention? (4) Where Else Can I Go for More Information? Appended are: Reproducible Handouts on Dropout Prevention. (ERIC).
