| Abstract | This guide is intended to help people in the nursing profession, especially deans at schools of nursing, to effectively influence public policy at the federal level. Introductory material identifies key Senate and House committees and stresses the importance of establishing and maintaining a relationship with one's representatives in the Congress. It also examines some of the principles involved in searching for a community of interests with political candidates both before and after the election, as well as the role of the American Association of Colleges of Nurses. A five-stage grassroots action plan is proposed, which includes: (1) community role and coalition building--the need for nursing schools to join in a broad coalition of groups with shared objectives; (2) introduction/re-introduction--the importance of meeting personally with representatives and/or senators; (3) developing a relationship with elected officials, with an emphasis on framing nursing issues in terms of the member's key concerns; (4) maintaining the relationship through frequent substantive contacts; and (5) mutuality--the importance of providing public support for a supportive legislator.
