AbstractThis report compares selected estimates from the two components of the 1995 National Household Education Survey (NHES:95) with estimates from other survey data. The two different components of the NHES:95, the Adult Education (AE) and the Early Childhood Program Participation (ECPP) components, cover a variety of topics related to participation in educational activities for adults and children. The various data sources (National Center for Education Statistics surveys and U.S. Census figures) used in this comparative report were chosen because they included recent topical information and populations as similar as possible to those in the NHES:95. Similarities and differences between estimates from the NHES:95 and other sources are discussed. Estimates from the NHES:95 AE component for participation rates in adult education are generally higher than those of previous data collections for the NHES, but for demographic characteristics, employment, and labor force status, the estimates are generally very similar to those for the Current Population Survey of the Census. Estimates from the NHES:95 regarding children's early educational experiences and participation in nonparental care and programs are generally quite similar to comparable estimates from other surveys. Differences that were observed were primarily attributed to differences in the wording of questions or in operational definitions. An appendix presents, in table form, a summary of the comparative data sets. (Contains 24 tables and 11 references.) (SLD)
