| Abstract | This document analyzes patterns in the arrest, judicial management, and correctional placement of female offenders. Data are from several federal databases, including the Children in Custody Census. In 1993, U.S. law enforcement agencies made an estimated 570,100 arrests involving females under the age of 18. Although male offenders still account for most delinquent acts, the relative growth in juvenile arrests involving females was more than double the growth for males between 1989 and 1993. While juvenile arrests for violent crimes increased 33% for males in that period, they increased 55% for females. Findings of this study support the popular contention that female delinquency has increased relatively more than male delinquency in recent years. Juvenile crime is still predominantly a male problem, but if recent trends continue, female delinquents will occupy even more of the time and attention of policymakers, service providers, court officials, law enforcement agencies, and communities and will require more correctional rehabilitation and education.
