Abstract | The Adult Education components of the 1991 and 1995 National Household Education Survey (NHES) collected the name and subject matter of a wide range of courses adults had taken in the previous months. Adult education involves a variety of types of courses, whether related to basic skills, equivalency programs, degree programs, or personal interests. In the NHES:95 courses were grouped into a specific set of areas, and information was collected on part-time courses toward a degree or certificate, work-related courses, and other formal structured courses. To provide data users with the ability to use course information, the data file for the survey includes codes for the courses taken. A course coding scheme containing 43 coding categories was developed for the Adult Education component, largely based on the work of C. Adelman and the College Course Map (Department of Education). This coding manual is organized into sections on: (1) procedures for coding courses; (2) examples of coding and analysis; (3) course coding categories; and (4) resolving discrepancy course codes.
