Abstract	Children need to make decisions to learn responsibility, but when they choose a destructive behavior, such as drug or alcohol use, then the consequences can be severe. This program concentrates on helping parents prevent their children from making harmful decisions. The workbook was designed for use with classroom instruction and the parent support group model. The booklet is divided into two parts. Part One -- Laying the Foundation for Change -- features units on understanding our children, addresses problematic behavior, provides a parent's formula for success, examines youth gangs, and explains personal action plans along with other conceptual issues. In Part Two -- Changing Behavior and Improving the Parent/Child Relationship -- the reader learns how to find help and support, how to communicate parental views, how to practice active listening and consistency, how to build positive self concepts, how to promote family unity, and other strategies. This book was developed specifically for parents of strong-willed or out-of-control children and its suggestions should help parents curb their childrens' involvement in serious problems. However, most of the parenting techniques suggested here can be useful in stopping any unwanted adolescent behaviors. The guide concludes with details on how to run a self-help support group. (RJM)
